Excerpt: Comparisons between Trump(ism) and Fascism have become frequent, and with good reason. These comparisons are
strongest between Trump and Mussolini — stronger than with Hitler and Nazi-ism. Detailed comparisons are difficult for at least two
reasons: 1) the historical circumstances are quite different between the 20s and 30s and today, and 2) Fascism was never a coherent
political theory or philosophy, but, instead, was a populist and nationalist development in Italy that Mussolini did not create, but did
A comparison between Trump and Mussolini in terms of character and style, however, is frighteningly strong — and does give some
guidance concerning future concerns. This comparison is based primarily on quotes from a book about Mussolini by R.J.B. Bosworth
(2010). In general, the quotes speak for the themselves, though I will add some commentary along the way. It should be noted that
this book was published years before similarities between Trump and Mussolini became politically relevant, and, thus, were not
written with Trump in mind.
I begin with Trump’s arrogant ignorance and incoherence:
“Other more critical contemporaries noticed instead the fluctuations in Mussolini’s ideas and the way he preferred to avoid in-depth
conversations, sometimes excusing himself by saying that the details should be left to the experts. Here, they discerned, was a
leader more interested in imposing his will than in harmonising his attitudes or policies. Here was a politician more interested in
seeming to know than in knowing.” pg 142
“He understood that a totalitarian dictator had to be, or to seem to be, expert in everything.” pg 177
“Cowing the press was only one part of building a totalitarian dictatorship.” pg 177
Bosworth points to a later developing ambition for Mussolini that is not yet overt with Trump — but it has already been hinted at by
some in his inner circle:
“The real novelty of his ambition lay in his pretensions to enter the hearts and minds of his subjects, and so install Fascism as a
political religion.” pg 177
Again, Trump’s ambition combined with a lack of coherence:
“and so readjusting his own history with his usual aplomb” pg 277
“ ‘Reactionary dictators are men of no philosophy, no burning humanitarian ideal, nor even an economic program of any value to
their nation or the world. [George Seldes]’ They were ‘gangsters’ more than anything else.” pg 246

added 03/01/2017 from recent email from Move On:
A couple of hours ago, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee voted against investigating Donald Trump's financial
entanglements and ties to the Russian government. This vote is the latest piece of evidence that Republicans are unwilling or unable
(and very likely both) to do their jobs—which is why the American people deserve an appointed commission charged with leading a
full-on and independent investigation. In a new television ad—thanks to a partnership between Vote Vets and MoveOn—retired
Rear Admiral Michael Smith calls on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan to appoint such an
independent commission to get answers about Trump. To increase the chance that Trump would see the ad prior to his address this
evening to a joint session of Congress, we aired it on "Fox and Friends" and "Morning Joe"—two of Trump's go-to TV shows. Rear
Admiral Smith delivered a message to Trump, Sen. McConnell, and Rep. Ryan: Defending America means finding the truth.
Yes it does. There’s legislation in both houses of Congress that calls for—essentially—a 9/11-style commission to investigate the ties
between Trump and Russia, but it won’t see the light of day until Sen. McConnell and Rep. Ryan get on board.

Excerpt: IT’S been a rollercoaster first two weeks with Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
In less than a fortnight, Mr Trump has already offended Mexicans, offended Australians, offended Muslims and offended
women. The groundswell of anger for some at least is being channelled into efforts to see him marched out of the White
House before his tenure is up. The only way that happens is via impeachment. It’s never been done before but it’s far from
impossible. A lawyer for the movement Impeach Donald Trump Now says the wheels are already in motion. But how would it
work? Put simply, with a vote in Congress. There’s a clause within the US Constitution that allows for a US President to be
removed from office for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanours”.It’s a broad definition of wrongdoing, and
some say Mr Trump’s failure to divest his businesses before taking office qualifies as a high crime. It’s a stretch, but the good
news for the impeachment movement is that Congress doesn’t need any actual evidence to proceed with the vote. It simply
requires a member to introduce a resolution calling for an impeachment investigation. From there, voting would get under
way in the House of Representatives first. If a majority ruled against Mr Trump, it would proceed to the Senate.
There’s a precedent for that. An impeachment against former president Bill Clinton was initiated in December 1998 after it
emerged he had an extramarital affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
Two charges passed the House of Representatives but were defeated in the Senate. Mr Clinton was acquitted on both…
“The violations, the corruption, and the threat to our republic are here now, but they will only get worse the longer he stays in
office. Americans deserve a President who is not beholden to foreign governments to keep his businesses afloat, and whose
decisions about bread-and-butter, not to mention life-and-death matters, will not be used to prop up Trump Towers around
the world.” The betting markets think impeachment is a possibility, too — SportsBet in Australia said on Thursday that
impeachment had firmed from $5 to $2.80.
But the problem for the anti-Trump movement is that no matter what the president does, Republicans control both houses.
Basically, an extraordinary series of events would be required for the president to be ousted prematurely.

Excerpt: With the election of Donald Trump last Tuesday, it became more important than ever that we stand up to protect
people and the values that lead to a free and open digital world. Overbearing government invasions into private lives must be
stopped. Mr. Trump and his staff will soon have access to some of the most wide-ranging surveillance infrastructure and
powers that have ever existed. In a campaign interview, Trump expressed a willingness to restore the oft-abused telephone
records surveillance under the Patriot Act, the law that eviscerated the privacy rights of hundreds of millions of innocent
Americans with no proof of a countervailing gain. This naked embrace of unconstitutional surveillance is particularly chilling
given its historical misuse against political opponents and Mr. Trump’s raw hostility to journalists and those who would seek
to shine a critical light on abuse of those powerful tools. We must protect the Internet from censorship. During his campaign,
Mr. Trump issued wild challenges to free speech online and net neutrality, and his transition team has signaled that the
coming policy agenda will undercut values that have been essential to the Internet’s growth as an engine of communication
and commerce. If those threats are carried out, they could shutter the innovations and business opportunities that have
emerged alongside the robust exchange of ideas, knowledge, and access enabled by digital technologies.

The Guardian: Russian Hackers By Luke Harding 12/16/2016
Security experts believe two Kremlin-connected groups were behind the hacks. One was was from the FSB spy agency, the
other from Russian military intelligence. Amazingly, they appear to have operated independently….Vladimir Putin has a
visceral dislike of Clinton. As US secretary of state, Clinton was responsible for a doomed attempt to “reset” relations between
Washington and Moscow. In 2011-12, Russians took to the streets to protest against Putin’s decision to become president for
the third time. Putin didn’t see this as a popular uprising; rather he believed Clinton had paid protesters to try to push him
from power. In the run-up to the US election, Russia’s state media portrayed Clinton as a warmonger. Its coverage of Donald
Trump, by contrast, was favourable. On Thursday, Barack Obama’s press secretary, Josh Earnest, said he shared the view of US
intelligence officials that Putin had directly authorised the hack. (Putin’s press spokesman dismissed the claim as absurd.)
Putin’s primary objective was probably to undermine the US election and create chaos. He may not have actually expected
Trump to win. The president-elect is now likely to lift sanctions on Russia. This would delight the Kremlin.

the election of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Both vowed they would encourage GOP electors to write-in

from among the top-three vote getters should enough electors reject Trump’s claim to the White House. Politico noted the

Trump’s war with the courts. The Supreme Court is likely to give expedited review to the order by the 9th Circuit upholding
Judge James Robart’s order that tossed out Trump’s bans on immigrants or refugees from seven countries, even permanent US
residents and others with valid green cards. It’s encouraging that the agencies of government, such as the State Department
and the Department of Homeland Security, immediately deferred to the court order, not to a president who thinks he can
govern by decree. But suppose the Supreme Court finds against Trump? Will he try to defy the high court? That would be a
first-class impeachable offense. Even Richard Nixon deferred to a Supreme Court order to turn over the Watergate tapes.
A second category of impeachable offense involves his mixing his personal profits with his official duties as president. That
describes his bizarre romance with Vladimir Putin, who presides over a nation where Trump has extensive business interests,
as well as Trump’s double standards in determining which Muslim nations were exempted from his executive order. Trump
randomly excluded Muslim nations in which he has business interests? These were precisely nations that did send terrorists.
The covered countries sent no terrorists, and had no Trump investments. Meanwhile, the CIA investigation of Trump’s bizarre

mutual benefit. He quoted a Chinese poem — previously cited by President Xi Jinping as a metaphor for U.S.-China ties —
depicting a river that flows inevitably, regardless of mountainous obstacles.
"This is a historical trend that cannot be changed by an individual's will," Wang said.
After what he described as a turbulent year steered by the trend of "reverse globalization" and punctuated by terror attacks,
Wang said China is now a mature nation that could act as a "stabilizer" in global affairs.
China under Xi is adopting an assertive leadership role on the world stage, Wang said, such as hosting the G20 summit and
heading discussions at the APEC forum in Peru.
"The world is choosing between openness and conservatism, cooperation and closure, transformation and old ways," Wang
said. "We will lead the way amid a shake-up in global governance, we will take hold of the situation amid international chaos,
we will protect our interests amid intense and complex games."

agenda is and we are NOT taking this sitting down. We are standing up and we are fighting back.
And Mike Pence is the perfect target for this message, because he just might be the most anti-choice governor in America.
Check it out:
He's governor of a state that literally criminalized women for having abortions.
He repeatedly signed clinic shutdown measures that subject abortion providers to burdensome restrictions not applied to

In Congress, he led the fight to shut down the government to defund Planned Parenthood.
He repeatedly cosponsored legislation that would make abortion illegal nationwide in almost all cases and voted for
legislation that would imprison abortion providers for up to two years.

Is Donald Trump a Threat to Democracy? By STEVEN LEVITSKY and DANIEL ZIBLATT (12/16/2016)
Excerpt: Donald J. Trump’s election has raised a question that few Americans ever imagined asking: Is our democracy in
danger? With the possible exception of the Civil War, American democracy has never collapsed; indeed, no democracy as rich
or as established as America’s ever has. Yet past stability is no guarantee of democracy’s future survival. We have spent two
decades studying the emergence and breakdown of democracy in Europe and Latin America. Our research points to several
warning signs. The clearest warning sign is the ascent of anti-democratic politicians into mainstream politics. Drawing on a
close study of democracy’s demise in 1930s Europe, the eminent political scientist Juan J. Linz designed a “litmus test” to
identify anti-democratic politicians. His indicators include a failure to reject violence unambiguously, a readiness to curtail
rivals’ civil liberties, and the denial of the legitimacy of elected governments.
New Yorker: Aftermath - Sixteen writers on trumps America Essays by Toni Morrison, Atul Gawande, Hilary Mantel, George Packer,
Jane Mayer, Jeffrey Toobin, Junot Díaz, and more (11/21/2016)
Excerpt:President Donald Trump should be given every chance to break his campaign promise to govern as an autocrat. But,
until now, no one had ever won the office by pledging to ignore the rule of law and to jail his opponent. Trump has the
temperament of a leader who doesn’t distinguish between his private desires and demons and the public interest. If he’s true
to his word, he’ll ignore the Constitution, by imposing a religious test on immigrants and citizens alike. He’ll go after his critics
in the press, with or without the benefit of libel law. He’ll force those below him in the chain of command to violate the code
of military justice, by torturing terrorist suspects and killing their next of kin. He’ll turn federal prosecutors, agents, even
judges if he can, into personal tools of grievance and revenge.
All the pieces are in place for the abuse of power, and it could happen quickly. There will be precious few checks on President
Trump. His party, unlike Nixon’s, will control the legislative as well as the executive branch, along with two-thirds of
governorships and statehouses. Trump’s advisers, such as Newt Gingrich, are already vowing to go after the federal
employees’ union, and breaking it would give the President sweeping power to bend the bureaucracy to his will and whim. The
Supreme Court will soon have a conservative majority. Although some federal courts will block flagrant violations of
constitutional rights, Congress could try to impeach the most independent-minded judges, and Trump could replace them
But, beyond these partisan advantages, something deeper is working in Trump’s favor, something that he shrewdly read and
exploited during the campaign. The democratic institutions that held Nixon to account have lost their strength since the
nineteen-seventies—eroded from within by poor leaders and loss of nerve, undermined from without by popular distrust.
Bipartisan congressional action on behalf of the public good sounds as quaint as antenna TV. The press is reviled, financially
desperate, and undergoing a crisis of faith about the very efficacy of gathering facts. And public opinion? Strictly speaking, it
no longer exists. “All right we are two nations,” John Dos Passos wrote, in his “U.S.A.” trilogy.

Excerpt: Including a Discussion of Possible Connections Between Militant Islamic Fundamentalists and the U.S. Extreme Right
There is no hard evidence linking domestic U.S. right-wing groups to either the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01; the mailing of real
anthrax letters, or other acts of domestic terrorism. For example, the list of potential suspects in the real anthrax mailing
cases is long, and the evidence is missing. Claims about a connection between the Oklahoma City bombing and Middle East
terrorists are based on dubious speculation. Some U.S. Extreme Right groups praised the 9/11 attacks along with some
militant Islamic fundamentalists. Most Muslims around the world denounced the attacks.
In considering potential suspects for terrorism, however, possible connections between the U.S. extreme right and certain
elements of militant Islamic fundamentalism cannot be dismissed. There is also a possible connection between these sectors
and some Black Nationalists, the Third Position, and Antisemitism. Racial nationalism is a core building block of fascism. Most
Black nationalists do not ascribe to the Third Position tendency. The matter of mental illness also needs to be considered.
If right-wing domestic groups are shown to be involved in the live anthrax letters, it may well be rank opportunism based on
one of the first two ideological affinities with the terrorists. The intriguing ideological link of Third Position ethnonationalism
deserves special scrutiny because it explains one reason why U.S. and European Extreme Right White supremacist activists
have already forged an alliance with Islamic supremacists or Arab supremacists that goes back over two decades.

a lot of people, both on campus and off it, were furious about political-correctness-run-amok—so furious that they would give
power to any man who stood in opposition to it.
I have watched this play out on campus after campus. I have watched dissident student groups invite Milo Yiannopoulos to
speak—not because they particularly agree with his views, but because he denounces censorship and undermines political
correctness. I have watched students cheer his theatrics, his insulting behavior, and his narcissism solely because the
enforcers of campus goodthink are outraged by it. It's not about his ideas, or policies. It's not even about him. It's about
vengeance for social oppression.
Trump has done to America what Yiannopoulos did to campus. This is a view Yiannopoulos shares. When I spoke with him
about Trump's success months ago, he told me, "Nobody votes for Trump or likes Trump on the basis of policy positions.
That's a misunderstanding of what the Trump phenomenon is."
He described Trump as "an icon of irreverent resistance to political correctness." Correctly, I might add.
Reuters: Trump supporters try to block vote recounts in three states. By David Ingram, Susan Heavey. (Dec. 2016)
Excerpt: Supporters of President-elect Donald Trump moved on Friday to halt the Green Party's requests for long-shot recounts
of the presidential votes in three states where Trump, a Republican, won with narrow victories.
Lawsuits were pending in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, three "Rust Belt" states which bucked their history of
supporting Democrats and gave Trump thin wins in the Nov. 8 election

RT: Backlash Bannon Trump Strategist
Excerpt: President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for White House chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, is facing a social media
backlash from Democrats and civil rights groups. They are now urging Trump to dump his “racist” campaign chief.
US Elections 2016
Bannon, the chief executive of Breitbart News, became CEO of Trump’s campaign in August, replacing Paul Manafort. Trump
named Bannon his “chief strategist” on Sunday, while making Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus his chief of staff.
On Monday, leading Democrats denounced Bannon as a divisive pick and proof that Trump’s campaign was based on bigotry.
Two major civil rights organizations also denounced Bannon, accusing him of racism and anti-Semitism.
